Chatham Cape Refreshed

Overview: This house was a simple tired Cape Cod with a small single car garage which was accessed through the basement rear entrance.
Challenge: The client wanted to expand the home creating a modern feel with traditional proportions. She also needed better access to accommodate the family’s daily routines. As opposed to entering through the garage, she wanted a connection to the exterior via a screened three-season room.
Solution: The solution centered on opening the lower level to create an open staircase that would connect to other areas of the house. We created a feature story window on the exterior side of the staircase. The lower level entry also provided a full mudroom and access to a finished basement. The open stairs also led to the new kitchen’s seating area.
The three-season screened porch served as a connection point for the family room, deck and new master bedroom. The open-air room included a raised fireplace extending the room’s usage into the fall and spring seasons.
This engagement was a first in blending colonial with modern design to create a clean, more modern aesthetic and less of the over-detail of more typical historic homes.
