Classic Dellwood Home Enhanced
Overview: This original brick center hall colonial already had additions—one a garage addition—on each side of the main house, giving it a disproportionate, elongated look. The clients now wanted a full three-car garage and a spacious suite to accommodate their blended family.
Challenge: The garage addition stood out as it did not match the original style and vocabulary of the original structure. What’s more, a survey showed that zoning restrictions would limit what we could change to the home’s exterior to keep it the appropriate distance from the property line.
Solution: We started fresh by removing the former addition and added a new structure that aesthetically and proportionately complemented the original home. We incorporated a large mudroom at the rear, which provided a practical way to enter the house either from the driveway or inside the garage. The new garage gave way to a separate suite built above the garage with two bedrooms and a shared bath, suitable for the two teenagers in the family. Downstairs, we created another bedroom and converted a restroom into a discrete full bathroom with shower suitable for a potential future mother-daughter living arrangement. We also reframed and completely redid the basement, expanding the area into a full basement.
